Emma Raducanu's former coach Francisco Roig hired by Iga Swiatek just two months after split from Brit

Emma Raducanu's former coach Francisco Roig has been hired by reigning Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek little more than two months after splitting with the Brit.

The former US Open champion split with Roig in late January following her second-round defeat at the Australian Open. The Spaniard was Raducanu's ninth coach since her US Open victory in 2021.

Swiatek won Wimbledon for the first time last year but parted ways with coach Wim Fissette after losing her opening match at the Miami Open, having been knocked out in the quarter-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells earlier in March.

Confirming the appointment on Thursday, the world No 4 posted a photo of herself and Roig on Instagram with the caption: "Welcome to the team, Francisco! Very excited for this new chapter."

Spain's Roig is best known for his 17-year stint as part of 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal's coaching team.

Swiatek, who also has four French Open titles and a US Open triumph on her record, has made the change just before the season switches to clay, which has traditionally been the Polish player's best surface.

Raducanu told Your Site News in March she felt that Roig, who she appointed in August 2025, had initiated the split by questioning the direction of their partnership following the Melbourne tournament.

"After Australia, me and Francis were talking. We have a great relationship, we could have a really open and honest conversation," Raducanu said.

"He ended up saying, 'look, I don't think this is going in the way we both want it to' so he ended it really.

"In a way I think we had a few moments where we weren't agreeing on a few things. Other than that we still maintain a great relationship."

Raducanu is yet to appoint another permanent coach since splitting with Roig but has been working with Andy Murray's former coach Mark Petchey on an ad-hoc basis.

She has withdrawn from next week's Linz Open in Austria as she seeks to regain her fitness having suffered an illness earlier in the season. The 23-year-old also missed the Miami Open.
